A typically Tuscan pastry not commonly available outside of Italy, these cookies made by Sinatti of Siena, are delicate, dainty, and light. Ricciarelli date back to when the Siennese Ricciardetto della Gherardesca returned from the Crusades to his castle near Volterra and remembered seeing cookies shaped like a Sultan's slippers.
These tender, moist almond cookies are made with coarse-ground almonds, sugar, honey, orange peel and vanilla. Serve with afternoon tea or coffee as well as a dessert to accompany clementines or tangerines along with a glass of Vin Santo or Moscato d'Asti.
